Call Guinness: Eckhard C. Schulz built the biggest steelpan of the world for the Norwegian St. Olavs hospital in 2005. In cooperation with the artist Martin Smidt, Torbjörn Skarlid, Dr. Werner Homberg (University of Dortmund) and the German company OASE GmbH Schulz produced two oversized pans made of stainless steel with 115 cm in diameter and a weight of about 25 kg, the instruments are tuned with five tones each (D, F, A, Bb and c, e, f, g, a).
The clou: the pan is played with the help of water jets that are “shot” onto the sound surfaces, and so make the steelpan sound magically.
Due to the fact that such a project has never been done before, lots of problems concerning construction, schedule and costs had to be solved, but were mastered greatly in the end by the big efforts of all participants.
Today, you can see this astonishing piece of art and craft as the “White Man’s Magic” (“Hvite manns magi”) in Trondheim, Norway.
